Getting ready for the cocoon harvest, inspection and storage
It is already September 10. Soon I will be tearing apart the condos. Each tube will be emptied and all the cocoons will be cleaned and inspected. I will store the cocoons in a special air mesh bag for the winter. From what I can tell I will have about 200 cocoons from this years egg laying. I hope for more, but for sure I should have 200 cocoons.
Next spring I will carefully monitor the release of bees and will kill the nasty Houdini flies. I really hate those nasty files.
One of my mason bees checking out a space in the bee condo. She refused to sign the lease and the annual price was free. I include free child care. She still refused.
Here is a photo of a mason bee checking our a tube. It was April 14, 2020. Many of the bamboo tubes were already filled. So she was inspecting a routed-wood-tray.
She hated it. They want BAMBOO tubes. I will only provide paper and bamboo tubes for 2021.
